This is the life. You’re vacationing in Hilton Head Island, and you have a bunch of exciting activities lined up. As you get ready for the day ahead, you hear the undeniable sound of raindrops on the window panes. Your heart sinks. What about the full day of outdoor excursions you had planned? How frustrating!
While the weather may not be cooperating, there’s no reason to spend the day holed up inside your hotel room watching reruns of Fixer Upper. There are so many great rainy day activities on Hilton Head Island that may be even more fun than what you had originally planned!
What to do in Hilton Head on a Rainy Day
While it’s true that the island is best known for outdoor entertainment and lounging on the beach, there’s still plenty of rainy day activities on Hilton Head Island. Here are six great ideas in case you happen to find yourself rained out during your vacation:
Hilton Head Distillery
Of course, we think a visit to the Hilton Head Distillery should be at the top of your list. We’re the island’s first and only distillery, and we guarantee an afternoon with us will make you forget all about the rainy weather and your ruined plans. First, you’ll definitely want to take our distillery tour. It’s about 45 minutes, and our wonderful tour guides will teach you a little about the history of rum and show you how the distillation process works. The best part? It comes with a full tasting flight and a souvenir shot glass! If you don’t have time for a tour, you can still try a flight of up to six of our spirits (served neat), plus a cocktail from our menu. It’s just $10 per person. For more details on the distillery and our tour schedule, visit our website.
Hilton Head Brewery
A brewery that welcomes kids? It’s not too good to be true, it’s Hilton Head Brewery, which is located on the north end of the island. They’re open seven days a week from 2 to 8pm, and tours of the brewery are available daily, you just need to call to reserve your spot. Adults will enjoy a free pint on the tour, and kids 10 and older will receive a free soda. Afterward, stop in the tasting room and choose from a constantly rotating selection of seasonal beers, year-round favorites, and local brewery collaborations on tap. Find out about tours by calling (843) 715-3251 and check out their current specials and happenings on Facebook or Instagram.
Maybe you’re more of a wine person, or maybe you like a little variety in your beverage selection… no judgement here! Either way, a stop at Island Winery is a must. Learn why they’re called the “best destination off the beaten path.” Island Winery is Hilton Head Island’s premiere winery, and they specialize in hand-crafting fine red and white wine from the world’s best grapes and local fruits. Grab a bottle to take home with you, enjoy some tastings, and relax in the barrel room with a glass of your favorite and a cheese platter (complimentary with a purchase of three or more bottles). The winery is open from 12:30 to 5:30 Monday through Saturday and 12:00 to 4:00 on Sunday. Visit islandwinery.com for more details!
Comedy Magic Cabaret
When rain ruins your plans, laugh it off at Kerry Pollock’s “funny not filthy” comedy venue, which features world class stand-up comedy from performers you can find headlining shows in Hollywood, Vegas, and on national television. Their brand new venue features an upscale cabaret-style showroom, a full bar with food service, and plenty of parking. Kerry himself takes the stage every night and delights audiences with his entertaining blend of comedy and magic, an artform he’s been perfecting for three decades. VIP front row and raised seating options are available. Learn more about the shows and amenities of this beautiful venue on their website.
Hilton Head Escape Room
Escape rooms are quickly becoming the hot new group activity, and it’s easy to see why. What could be more fun than playing detective, solving puzzles, and racing against the clock with the people you love most? You’ll forget all about the rainy weather as you tap into your inner Sherlock Holmes. Find out more about the various adventures available at the Hilton Head Escape Room on their website here.
There’s nothing quite as cozy as a movie on a rainy day, but don’t settle for your hotel’s outdated on demand selection. Make it a fun family memory by taking a trip to the Northridge Cinema to see the latest new release instead. Enjoy the ultimate relaxing experience in their electric reclining lounge chairs, complete with footrests! This cinema was voted the Reader’s Choice “Best Movie Theatre” by The Island Packet. If you’re in the mood for a good movie, head to Northridge Cinema, grab some popcorn, and show that bad weather who’s boss.
Coastal Discovery Museum
One of the best rainy day activities in Hilton Head is the Coastal Discovery Museum. Learn about the history, art, and culture of the Lowcountry on this 68-acre historic property. Spend the afternoon walking the extensive trails, taking in the ancient live oaks and cedar trees, and even see horses grazing in the fields. You’ll get a first-hand glimpse at life on Hilton Head Island as it was in the past. There’s no admission fee to visit the museum, and there’s a Kids’ Zone inside the Discovery House for little ones to burn off some pent-up energy. Find more information about this Smithsonian Affiliate museum on their website.
